Empowering Young Innovators: Karimjee Foundation at the 2024 YST Awards

Championing Science and Innovation in Tanzania

For over a decade, Karimjee Foundation has proudly been the main sponsor of the Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) Awards, supporting young innovators in science, technology, and research. On September 19, 2024, this year’s edition of the YST Awards took place under the theme “Using Science & Technology to Transform Tanzania.”

The event brought together 90 students from 40 schools, who presented 45 innovative projects across six categories:

  • Social Sciences

  • Climate Change & Environmental Sciences

  • Biological Sciences

  • Agricultural Sciences

  • Technology & Computer Sciences

  • Physical, Chemical & Mathematical Sciences

Recognizing Excellence

Karimjee Foundation awarded four major recognitions to outstanding students:

  • Overall YST Winners: Salha Shamimu Hamisi & Ramlat Hamad Abdullah (Lumumba Secondary School, Zanzibar) – received university scholarships.

  • Runner-Up Winners: Meda Idd Omondi & Musa Jairosi Albert (Sikirari Secondary School, Kilimanjaro) – awarded TZS 2.1 million.

  • Special Education Scholarships: Winfrida Vicent Haliyake & Ally Abdallah Almasi (Mitunduruni Secondary School) – received university scholarships.

  • Perpetual Award (Honoring the Late Hatim Amir Karimjee): Eric Egidius Kweyunga & Aidan Mjuni Andrew (Kibaha Secondary School).

A Platform for Growth

The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Hon. Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, Minister at the Presidents Office for Planning and Investment, alongside key YST founders, partners, and sponsors. Karimjee Foundation’s long-term commitment to this initiative has led to 49 scholarships awarded to date, helping students pursue their education and drive scientific advancement in Tanzania.

The YST Awards continue to serve as a launchpad for young innovators, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry, research, and problem-solving. Through this initiative, Karimjee Foundation remains dedicated to empowering the next generation and shaping Tanzania’s future through education and science.
