A New Chapter in Zanzibar’s Tourism Landscape
On January 7, 2025, Karimjee Group, in partnership with The Cocoon Collection, officially launched the Bawe Island Cocoon Hotel Resort, marking a significant milestone in Zanzibar’s hospitality and tourism sector. The $42 million investment is part of the Government of Tanzania’s initiative to lease islets in Zanzibar, encouraging sustainable tourism and economic growth.
The launch event, held on Bawe Island, was graced by President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania and President Hussein Ali Mwinyi of Zanzibar, reflecting the project’s national significance. The event also coincided with the 61st anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution, further emphasizing Zanzibar’s transformation and progress over the years.
Sustainability Meets Luxury
Bawe Island, located approximately 10km from Stone Town, has undergone significant development to accommodate this luxury retreat. The Bawe Island Cocoon Hotel Resort boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including:
Solar energy infrastructure, ensuring an environmentally conscious energy supply.
A desalination plant, providing a self-sufficient water source.
World-class accommodation, offering guests an exclusive island escape.
By integrating sustainability into its operations, the resort aligns with Karimjee Group’s commitment to responsible investments that support long-term economic and environmental growth.
A Strategic Investment in Zanzibar’s Future
Bawe Island is one of 57 islets in Unguja and Pemba identified for private investment, 20 of which have already been leased to investors as part of the government’s tourism expansion strategy. The success of this project positions Zanzibar as a prime destination for high-end tourism while driving employment opportunities and infrastructure development in the region.
This partnership between Karimjee Group and The Cocoon Collection not only brings world-class hospitality to Bawe Island but also reinforces Zanzibar’s appeal as a premium tourism hub in Africa.
Looking Ahead
The launch of Bawe Island Cocoon Hotel Resort is just the beginning. As Karimjee Group continues to invest in sustainable hospitality ventures, we look forward to shaping a future where luxury and environmental consciousness go hand in hand.
